Iditarod Historic Trail Alliance · Preserving Alaska's 2,400-Mile National Historic Trail Network

Accessibility Statement

The Iditarod Historic Trail Alliance is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all visitors, targeting conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA.

1. Conformance & Accessible Design Features

This website has been designed and built to support keyboard-only users, screen readers, mobile zoom/reflow up to 400%, and reduced-motion preferences in accordance with WCAG 2.2 Level AA:

  • On-Page Accessibility Options Panel: Use the floating accessibility button in the lower-left corner of every page to adjust text size (Increase / Decrease), switch to a high-legibility system font, enable High Contrast, Grayscale, or Inverted Colors, highlight all links, pause animations, or enlarge the pointer cursor. Preferences are saved locally in your browser without cookies or tracking.
  • Keyboard Navigation & Focus Indicators: All interactive menus, filters, dialogs, links, and forms are operable via keyboard (`Tab`, `Shift+Tab`, `Enter`, `Space`, `Escape`) with high-contrast visible focus outlines and a "Skip to main content" link (`#main-content`).
  • Semantic Structure & Landmarks: Pages use semantic HTML5 landmarks (`header`, `nav`, `main`, `aside`, `footer`) with `aria-current="page"` state indicators and strictly hierarchical headings (`h1`–`h3`).
  • Text Alternatives for Maps & Media: Interactive third-party embeds (such as the 1920 Arne Erickson ArcGIS Story Map and UAF Project Jukebox) include descriptive titles, text summaries, and direct links.
  • Reduced Motion: Animations and smooth scrolling automatically respect `prefers-reduced-motion: reduce` and the "Pause Animations" panel toggle.

2. Archival PDF Documents (2013–2026)

Our Document Library preserves 150 historical PDF publications—including issues of The Tripod newsletter dating back to 2013, historic maps, and legacy scanned documents. While newer publications (such as the 508-compliant Ceremonial Start Guide) include accessible tags, some legacy archival PDFs may not be fully tagged for screen readers.

If you need an accessible text version or alternative format for any PDF document in our archive, please contact us or email iditarodhta@gmail.com with the document title and we will promptly provide an accessible alternative.

3. Feedback & Assistance

If you encounter any accessibility barrier on `iditarod100.org`, please reach out to us at iditarodhta@gmail.com so we can assist you and remediate the issue.
