Trail Partners & Agencies

Under the National Trails System Act, the 2,400-mile Iditarod National Historic Trail is managed through cooperative partnerships among federal and state land agencies, Alaska Native organizations, statewide nonprofits, and local community trail chapters.

How the 2,400-Mile Trail Network Is Stewarded Together

The National Trails System Act was established in 1968 with the vision of managing America’s national trails through partnerships. In Alaska, the principal non-profit partner is the Iditarod Historic Trail Alliance (IHTA). We work closely with the Congressionally-designated Trail Administrator at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Because the BLM directly manages only a portion of the Iditarod Trail, cooperative partnerships with other federal, state, private, municipal, and Tribal land managers and local volunteer chapters throughout Alaska are critical to the Trail’s protection.
